Queering Your Screen: The Pilot Episode
September 11, 2012Why hello there, Diffuse 5-ers! You may know me as “that girl whose name is at the bottom of the intro to the Queer Agenda Events List every Friday,” or as just another one of those hipster-esque lesbians you see blending in with everyone else in Davis Square.
But what you may not know is that I have an unhealthy obsession with all things related to television and film. Really, it’s a bit sad how often my roommates will say something like, “Who’s that actress playing the wife of the suspect?” as we watch yet another Law & Order: SVU marathon (which, sidenote – Olivia Benson, you are free to walk into my life any day now; I’ll wait patiently), and I respond with, “Oh! I recognize her – she was on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy back in season three.” And then I usually follow it up with, “Why on earth do I know that?” before lamenting the fact that cinematic trivia seems to stick with me more than things I actually learned in school (which is only slightly daunting, considering I had my first library science courses this week). I promise, however, to take that generally useless knowledge and give it all back to you, dear readers, so that you can also trounce your friends in a lively game of Trivial Pursuit.

“Okay, Maddi, okay, now we know you’re a TV nerd, but just what is this blog going to be about?” you may be asking. Well kids, like other gay lady entertainment bloggers before me, I’m going to take one for the team and watch the shows and movies our mainstream (and not-so-mainstream) media has to offer, and talk about the characters that most resemble all of us.
The most common type of post you’ll see from me on Mondays is are blurb-sized recaps of the previous week’s shows that have a queer-of center-lady in the form of a main, recurring, or guest character. However, because most television shows air on a cycle of new episodes followed by a few weeks of re-runs, I’ll be using those hiatus weeks to review a new (or perhaps retro review an older) LGBTQ film. But! The boob tube and the silver screen are not the only places we’re getting gayish characters from these days – in fact, some of the most poignant, well-rounded and well-written queer characters are right at our fingertips on any number of webseries, so I’ll be alerting your attention to those as well!
So though I’m a little said to have lost my summer baby gays Emily Fields and Paige McCullers and the rest of the Pretty Little Liars until January, and I won’t get to see Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander playing the dykiest straight BFFs ever on Rizzoli & Isles until November, it’s fall premiere season! So all of those shows that left us hanging in May are coming back this month, along with a whole slew of new ones, which means my poor DVR is going to have to work its little butt off so that I can tell you all about them.

And as I read in a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly, I’m pretty sure about a gazillion movies are coming out this fall as well, and I can only hope some of them will be in some way representative of our daily lives, and thus worth a Diffuse 5 full-on review.
Also, although I will attempt to stay focused and professional in my recaps and reviews, be ready to expect frequent discussion of the inherent hotness of ladycops, comments on the subtext-filled tension between supposedly straight ladies, why Canadians are amazing when it comes to gay characters, and occasional outdated and overused references to that show we all loved to hate, The L Word. I’m pretty much an equal opportunity geek, guys.

Though I already have certain shows in mind, please take a moment in the comments to tell me which shows/movies/webseries absolutely can’t be missed!
